DANRIA’s aim is to help poor Dalits for education by establishing computer centers, evening coaching centers and Sewing center for women to get rid of manual scavenging. DANRIA is collaborating with www.theiidea.com to run these centers.

Computer center in dalit hostel, at Meerut, UP:

This Hostel is run by Dr. Ambedkar Shoshit Samaj Shiksha Prashar Samiti, Meerut, UP., under supervision of Mr. Jaipal Singh, Retired, Joint Commissioner, of UP Cadre. Why Computer Center is essential: The students who are living in this hostel came from very poor back ground. Most of them are from manual scavengers or manual labor’s families who were not able to go any school. Mr. Jaipal Singh talked with their parents and brought these students in the hostel. He always keep doing this practice to help por kids who are not going to school. This hostel is running from last about 10 years and growing slowly but we do have limitations to take students because of fixed accommodation. In the current education system, computer training is very essential to move forward and look whole world on the screen. If these students need to go for computer training that requires more money and time which is not affordable for the organizers and students. Introduction:

Baba Sahib Dr. Bheem Rao Ambadkar sacrificed his life to secure rights for Dalits in India and succeeded in putting the Dalit caravan on the way to progress. We can all see the result in front of us: discrimination against Dalits is legally banned. In fact, affirmative action has been integrated into our constitution reserving proportionate number of seats in jobs and educational institutions have been reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (CTs). As a result, some of us have succeeded in becoming educated and in government jobs. For these privileges we are indebted to Dr. Ambedkar as well as to our society. We need to pay back to the society and push our societal caravan a bit further on the progress road.

The above mentioned organizations, namely, Innovative Institute for Development and Education of All (IIDEA) and Dr. Ambedkar NRI Association (DANRIA), have been established to enable us to pay back to the society and to push our society caravan a bit further on the road to "Liberty, equality, fraternity (brotherhood)".

Dr. Bachchu Lal has played key role in organizing the above mentioned organizations (IIDEA & DANRIA). He founded DANRIA in the USA; and decided to take tours of different states in India, meeting various Dalit leaders in various parts of India. With his help and the help of his new and old friends in India IIDEA has been founded. A brief synopsis of his tour of India is given in the Appendix-I.

In his tour of India In the last few years, Dr. Bachchu Lal has visited, Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan, M.P., Bihar, Chandigarh, Haryana, UP & Uttarakhand. He met many social workers, community organizers and activists in many parts of India and kept in touch with many of them via phone conversations from the USA. With their help and encouragement a trust called Innovative Institute for Development and Education of All (IIDEA) was founded in 2010 and registered in 2011. It was decided that IIDEA would try to help in educational projects as well as in developmental projects depending upon availability of funds, volunteers and partners. It was also decided that IIDEA will pay special attention for scavenger community, as this community happens to be at the very bottom of the social structure; and until the very bottom is raised, the whole society will continue to suffer from inequality and extreme disparity, injustice and strife in the society.

Dr. Bachchu Lal was also involved in founding another organization; it happens to be in the USA: Dr. Ambedkar NRI Association, (DANRIA) (www.danria.org), Baltimore, MD, USA. It has tax exemption under 501(c)(3) (2007) and  was established to help untouchables / underprivileged, poor in India, especially those coming from manual scavenging communities.

As aims and objectives of the two organizations, IIDEA & DANRIA are very similar it is but natural for them to collaborate. It is hoped that after IIDEA obtains FCRA, our US compatriots eager to help their brethren in India will find a suitable conduit to help via DANRIA – IIDEA route.

Aims and objectives of IIDEA:

IIDEA’s motto is to foster equality and justice in the society and organization’s objectives are as follows:

1-Establish new schools, coaching centers, vocational training institutions, colleges, and universities for the downtrodden.

2-Prepare students for various competitive examinations such as IIT-JEE, AIEEE, IAS, MCE, AIPMT etc.

3-Establish hostels near educational institutions in cities for impoverished pupils.

4-Encourage individuals to form Self-Help Groups (SHG) of 10-20 people and implement the concepts of micro-insurance, micro-savings, and micro-credit within these groups. These groups will be joined together in democratic fashion. Some of the bigger groups may go on to form cooperatives of various kinds

DANRIA is willing to start few coaching centers among poor communities in small villages or slum areas in 2014.

Proposed plan for 2014:

Current status of most government schools is quite deplorable. And good quality private schools are too expensive for most Dalit students. Helping Dalit students attend private schools would be too expensive. Moreover, it will weaken the government schools further. For the same amount of money we can arrange for private coaching/ tutors for larger number of Dalit students attending government schools.  As such, best option for organizations like ours (IIDEA & DANRIA) is to help Dalit students is to attending the government schools with some evening or after school coaching or tutoring. Therefor IIDEA is planning to establish about 20 evening coaching centers among poor Dalit communities. These coaching centers will be for the students from class KG to 12th.

Strategy for teaching them may be varied to suit the students and teachers. Possibly for some groups (of students) traditional teacher may be more suitable; on the other hand in certain circumstances “study-center” like environment may appear to be more suitable. Possibly students from various levels/classes may have to be clubbed together, or students of each class may have to be segregated for teaching. Possibly some difficult students may have to be dealt with separately. In certain places the coaching may be arranged to take place right after the school hours; while in other situations it may be better to arrange for coaching or the study-center to take place in the evening. In some cases students may be charged a certain amount of fee or they may be taught for free. Students preparing to go to college may need special help in the 11th and 12th grades.

There are innumerable possibilities and innumerable ways to teach. In words of Dr. Bachchu Lal:

“When I was studying in B.Sc. at that time I was living in a scavenger community and for my survival, I was teaching about 30 students from class 1st to 5th in one batch and each student was paying Rs.10/= month and lot of times these students were not able to pay their fee. In second batch, I was teaching 3 students from class 6th to 10th and each student was paying Rs.15/month. By presenting this example, I would like to give a message that for these poor scavenger community people in a slum area of a big city Lucknow which is the capital of U.P., it was very tough for this community people to pay Rs.10/= month for their education.”

It will be for the local IIDEA working committee, in consultation with the concerned students and teacher(s), to decide the modality of teaching. Major part for teacher will be paid by IIDEA.

How can we establish an evening coaching center with the help of the IIDEA?

1- Establish an IIDEA committee of 7 to 10 people of the community who can contribute at least Rs.50 o 100 per month.

2- Rs.30/= per month required from the parents of the students.

3- Hire teachers from our community who can charge less fee, specially focus on the students who are studying in class 11th to degree courses.

4- Prepare a budget for 10 months classes start from July 15th to May 15th for 10 months.

5- Discus with your State IIDEA Committee.

6- Central Committee will pay very three months to the President of the Community, IIDEA Committee or IIDEA will make other arrangements to pay fee.

7- If some poor students need help for stationary then please make budget and submit a proposal to the state committee. Central will provide support.

8- In special consideration, if any student cannot pay Rs.30/= month then, IIDEA can consider these kind of students as no fee students and will be supported by IIDEA.

Else forget about all that has been mentioned above and let the local IIDEA working committee design and decide on their own strategy to accomplish their goal. As long as their activity has something to do with education (including physical educational, sports and games) and development, their activity should be fine with IIDEA.

Request to our community:

Please join IIDEA and make some monetary, physical, mental or any other kind of contribution to help it serve our society. We are still not getting any help from the government. IIDEA is running solely with your help.

IIDEA PAMPHLET

About IIDEA:

Innovative Institute for the Development and Education of All (IIDEA) is a platform for anyone wishing to do something towards the Development and Education for “all” downtrodden segments of our society. Beneficiaries of our projects as well as providers of benefits have a good mix of people from all segments of society.

Aim:

IIDEA’s aim is to foster equality and justice in the society and objectives are as below:

1-Establish new schools, coaching centers, vocational training institutions, colleges, and universities for the downtrodden.

2-Prepare students for various competitive examinations such as IIT-JEE, AIEEE, IAS, MCE, AIPMT etc.

3-Establish hostels near educational institutions in cities for impoverished pupils.

4-Encourage individuals to form Self-Help Groups (SHG) of 10-20 people and implement the concepts of micro-insurance, micro-savings, and micro-credit within these groups. These groups will be joined together in democratic fashion. Some of the bigger groups may go on to form cooperatives of various kinds.

5-Above mentioned democratic process will be focusing mainly to provide quality education to these people and bring up education level of these poor people, so that these people can compete with other students in competitions.

Resources:

1-Use the existing infrastructure of schools and colleges more efficiently by encouraging after-regular school time for educational, social and cultural activities.

2- Use religious places for educational purposes for students.

3-Funds: Fund generation, via making members, submit projects to various national and International agencies and support from NRI members.

Infrastructure:

1-Head office of the IIDEA will be in Delhi but branches of IIDEA shall be established at state or district or city or at any levels.

2- To establish a branch of IIDEA, smaller groups will be encouraged.

3-Funds must be deposited in one account directly or via sending to head office. Checks or drafts must be for IIDEA and stating account number and account payee.

4-IIDEA account number, member list and projects will be posted weekly basis on the website ( www.theiidea.org ) for every member.

Strategy:

1-Each member must contribute at least one rupee/day or Rs.30/month or Rs.365/year or more as much anyone can contribute.

2-Each member may also help to bring two more members for IIDEA. This process will help to bring more members in IIDEA.

3-Funds may be used via approval of Head office but projects will be advised by the branch officials and grass root level and funds will be provided by the head office directly to the grass root level to the people who will be responsible to run the project but monitoring will be done by the district and state officials.

4-To provide quality education, IIDEA, will help via providing, fee, books, stationary and coaching to the students after school hrs because now days as per government rules, any student should not be failed till VIII grade. A sub group, of teachers in the government schools, does not pay attention to dalit students because of several reasons. So result will be this that after grade VIII, our students will be ZERO after grade VIII and in class IX, they will not be able to compete with other students and then only option will be for dalit students to drop out from the school and start manual scavenging. This is the Brahminical Manuwadi politics against Dalits in INDIA, especially in small towns and villages where our poor manual scavengers are hardly surviving. This is the reason IIDEA must start this project as soon as possible from village levels.

5-Our goal is to start working as soon as possible at grass root level from small villages, towns and cities where our students of slum areas are studying in government schools.

Conclusions:

Participation in the above mentioned social, educational, economic endeavors would unite all downtrodden people of the society. The program will also help to bring education levels up via providing quality education.
